Editorial: K-9 officers deserve support
SPECIALLY TRAINED DOGS have taken on vital roles in local police departments during the past few decades. These highly intelligent animals assist their human partners with narcotics detection, crowd control, tracking and other important tasks.
What many people may not realize is that the money to support many police department K-9 officers and units comes solely through donations from local residents, businesses and organizations. Any responsible pet owner knows the cost of caring for their beloved companions — whether it be a dog, cat or goldfish — can be pricey. Expenses such as food, medical/veterinary costs, grooming, etc., are just some of the basic costs associated with being a pet owner. Police dogs — who are often put in harm’s way alongside their human counterparts — require much more than our domestic pets and it isn’t cheap.
