Monongahela City Council on Wednesday narrowly approved a new rental property inspection ordinance.
Introduced by Councilwoman Claudia Williams, the ordinance will allow the city to strictly enforce property inspections and hold landlords accountable for blighted properties.
“It’s to make sure all properties are safe for all residents,” Williams said. “Some properties are very neglected, some vacant and decaying, and we want to address that.”
Williams said rental properties will undergo annual inspection and, if any violations are found, property owners will be given a grace period to rectify the problems.
“You see in the report every month that people are being fined for not doing their residential permitting,” she said. “This will make the property owners responsible and they won’t be able to rent if they don’t bring their buildings up to code.”
