Maples use big inning to rout Trojans

Sometimes in the first few  games of a season, it is all about limiting the damage.

And unfortunately for the California softball team, they could not stop a big inning defensively and could not get one of their own offensively Wednesday.

The Trojans committed seven errors on defense, as visiting Mapletown collected a 15-5 win over Cal in the Section 2-1A opener for both squads.

“We had a few things snowball on us today and we allowed the big innings,” Cal coach Matt White said. “Give credit to Mapletown, but we gave them so many extra outs and extra chances to score in their big innings. They took full advantage of it. If we clean up our defense, it could have been a different game.”

Kera Urick suffered the loss in the circle for the Trojans (0-3, 0-1), but White liked the poise of his senior righty in the contest.

“Kera battled out there,” White said. “We take a lot of positives out of her pitching performance today. I think when Kera is on is when she pitches with a little bit of emotions and anger. That is the type of emotions I like to see in the circle, it is controlled emotions. When she is locked in, she is tough to hit.”
