Dorothy Ann McMinn Upperman – Hempfield Township
Dorothy Ann McMinn Upperman, born April 17, 1940, in North Charleroi, a daughter of Martin L. and Harriett Stoneman McMinn, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024. Dorothy graduated from Rostraver High School in 1958, and from West Penn Hospital School of Nursing in 1961. Dorothy married Harry N. Upperman on Sept. 2, 1961, the day after graduating from West Penn. She worked for two years in Norfolk, Va., until Harry’s discharge from the Navy. She worked for nine years at Westmoreland Hospital then became a stay-at-home mom, raising their two children, Linda and Kevin, and being very involved in their activities and in West Newton United Presbyterian Church. In 1989, she went back to work as a charge nurse at Westmoreland Manor until retirement in 2001. Dorothy is a long-standing, faithful member of West Newton U.P.C., having served as an elder and a volunteer, and she was active in the Presbyterian Women’s Association. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Westmoreland Manor and Smithton Food Bank. In addition to being survived by her beloved husband, Harry; Dorothy is survived by her children, daughter Linda S. Kephart (Luke) and son, Kevin L. Upperman (Beth); and her grandchildren, Joshua (Midge) Carter-Kephart, Rebekah Kephart, Caleb Kephart and William Upperman. She is also survived by her sister, Lucille Geary of Dawson, Pa.; sister-in-law, Olive McMinn; brother-in-law, Jack Jones; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert and Bruce McMinn; and sister, Betty Lou McMinn Jones. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Rostraver Township, 724-929-7934, www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com, where a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday with Pastor John Manon officiating. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to either West Newton United Presbyterian Church or the Presbyterian Women’s Association Missions Fund.
