Richard Alan ‘Rich’ Jones – Chesterfield, Va.
Richard Alan “Rich” Jones, 82, of Chesterfield, Va., died suddenly on Jan. 9, 2024, at his assisted living residence. Born in Charleroi on June 20, 1941, he briefly attended Bethany College (W.Va.) to pursue a career in ministry. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, wanting to go into chaplaincy. He married his hometown sweetheart, Maureen Ann Black, in 1961. They lived at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, where his focus shifted to military intelligence. After the service, the couple settled in the Enon community of Chesterfield. He briefly worked at Allied Chemical in Hopewell, Va. Later he worked for DuPont at its Spruance plant near Richmond and retired after 38 years. He was a life-long member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), attending First Christian Church – Hopewell and serving as a deacon, elder, church board chair and Disciples Men ministry leader. Rich was Maureen’s devoted and courageous caregiver during her battle with Alzheimer’s. He survived his lovely bride by one year, one month and one day. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Charles E. and Vera M. (née Ramsey) Jones; and brothers, Charles William “Billy” and David W. Jones. Survivors include son, Scott A. Jones (Pamela) and daughter, Sheri Burlew, both of Nottoway; daughters, Stacy Jones (Richard) of Prince George and Kimberly Gryder (Ray) of Mechanicsville; nieces, Jayne Kill (Richard) of Naperville, Ill., Jennifer Cowan (Cedric) of Dallas, Texas; and nephew, Jason Jones of Pompano Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Lindsey Bruce (Dakota) of Henrico, Andrew J. Burlew of Blackstone, Cody Jones (fiancé Jenn) of Colonial Heights, Blake Jones (Kayla) of Blackstone, Daniel Jones of Richmond, Gabriel and Liam Gryder; and great-grandchildren, Trentin Thibodeaux and Brinley Jones. The family is grateful for the care and support provided by Seaton, Anthology of Midlothian assisted living facilities in Chesterfield and the Cremation Society of Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Richard A. Jones to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 203 N. 11 th Ave., Hopewell VA 23860. A celebration of life event will be announced at a later date.
