World War II dog tag returned to local family

The family of a World War II veteran has been reunited with a piece of their loved one’s history that had been buried under an Australian airfield for eight decades. Staff Sgt. Samuel Wilkinson of Belle Vernon was just 22 when he and his crew in the 403rd Bombardment Squadron took off 4:25 a.m. Sept. 7, 1943, on a reconnaissance mission in a U.S. Army Air Force bomber nicknamed “Pride of the Cornhusker.”
