While there is a contested race in North Belle Vernon for three spots on council, no matter the outcome of next week’s general election, there likely won’t be a change in council chambers.
There are three, four-year terms open this year with four incumbent candidates running.
Incumbent Republicans council President Brett Berish and Paula Usher are running for reelection. Incumbent Alia Wiant was appointed to fulfill the remainder of the late RJ Sokol’s term after he resigned in February 2021. Wiant, a Democrat, has filed to run for a full term.
Incumbent Harry K. Jones replaced former council Vice President Geoffrey DeWitt who resigned in January. Jones, a Democrat, has filed for a four-year term.
If Jones wins next week, he will vacate his appointed seat and council will likely appoint the lowest vote getter to take that spot, Berish said.
If Jones is not one of the top three vote getters, things will remain unchanged.
