Monessen’s founder was a Civil War hero

As Monessen celebrates its 125th birthday, the life of the city’s founder, James M. Schoonmaker, is back in the spotlight. In 1899, when he founded Monessen, Schoonmaker was a prosperous industrialist, a multi-millionaire and a respected member of the community.
