Food banks prepare for effects of changes to SNAP benefits

Food banks in Western Pennsylvania are bracing for a surge of requests following government benefit rollbacks this month. The federal government announced in December that it would end “continuous enrollment” for its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, March 1 — halting second monthly payments for enrolled households. Congress initiated the policy in March 2020 to ease food insecurity for at-risk households. With additional payments ending, families enrolled in the program will go back to one food allotment per month.
