Monongahela council continued rolling in city improvements Wednesday, accepting a bid for a Railroad Street project and submitting a grant application for upgrades at the Monongahela Aquatorium.
Council accepted a proposal from the EADS Group for a storm-sewer replacement project near the intersection of Railroad and Fifth streets. The city will pay the firm an initial $17,000 to begin the project.
The work includes replacing 145-feet of stormwater piping, replacing a stormwater catch basin and manhole cover and installing two new catch basins near the entrance to the police station and the ramp of the fire station.
In its preliminary stages of the project, EADS Group will survey the area, design the new system and submit designs to review. The city may enter into a separate agreement with the company after project footwork is complete.
Council also agreed to send a grant application to Washington County Tourism Grant Program for $40,000 for new handrails at the aquatorium. Councilwoman Sarah O’Brien said council wants to add rails down the middle of the venue to improve safety.
“We had a number of complaints about the lack of middle rails after last summer,” she said. “It was a busy summer.”
