Exhibit focuses on Donora segregation

The Civil Rights Era brings certain images to mind. We picture student sit-ins, Black and white drinking fountains, fire hoses, attack dogs, policemen with raised batons and protestors covering themselves. Our collective memory places these events in a common setting — the South. However, while Jim Crow collapsed dramatically in southern states, quieter forms of segregation had crept alongside it for years. Practices like red-lining, white-only designations and Black-voter intimidation had pervaded across the country, including Western Pennsylvania.
