There aren’t too many grandmothers around who can still turn cartwheels, but “Sissy” Cieply Jochmann, a 1971 graduate of Monessen High School, can turn them perfectly.
Her real first name is Betty, but she goes by Sissy, and she happens to be “the most talented female gymnast to ever come out of the Mon Valley,” according to historian Steve Russell.
Jochmann helped lead Monessen to an unprecedented four straight PIAA titles, starting in 1968. She was also the all-around state champion over that lengthy span. She won the AAU and WPIAL championships, too. “Those were the glory years,” she said with a smile.
