BVA Middle School students to stage ‘Social Dis Dance Sing: A Pandemical’
For the MVI
As COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease, life as we know it is beginning to return to normal. The performing arts are no exception.
So, the timing is perfect for the Belle Vernon Area Middle School Drama Department’s annual musical.
This year it is aptly titled “Social Dis Dance Sing: A Pandemical.” It will be performed 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Garde Stage in Donora’s Palmer Park.
The past school year has been challenging, with in person, hybrid and remote learning. When the BVAMS 2020 musical was canceled due to the pandemic, the hope was that things would be back to normal by the following school year.
In reality, what happened was a series of hit-and-miss school days, followed by cancellations and rescheduling of events. The BVAMS directing staff did not want the students to miss out on another production, but with the constantly changing restrictions, planning for this show got started later than normal. It became evident to the directors that there would not be enough rehearsal time to put on a regular musical and if it were to happen, it would have to be held at an outside venue. In essence, they had to put a show together in half the time of a traditional musical in circumstances that were twice as hard.
The result was the directors selecting songs from some of their favorite classic musicals and writing their own story around them.
