Monessen council held a work session meeting Monday night that seemed more like an election or campaign event.
The meeting began with Mayor Matt Shorraw, who is up for re-election against fellow Democrat Ron Mozer, saying he has heard “numerous reports of people running for office or voters being threatened.”
Shorraw said he doesn’t know who is making the threats, but if he finds out “they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And, I’ve already reached out to the Department of State and I plan to reach out to the DA’s office as well to let them know that this is going on.”
Shorraw said no matter whom a person represents or what their party is or whom they support, they should not be threatened.
“They should not feel threatened for who they support,” Shorraw said. “I just want to let everyone know this is what’s going on and it will not be tolerated.”
Councilman Don Gregor said when “this stuff” happens “it always seems to be coming from one direction and it’s unfortunate.”
Gregor said he understands that once a report was made to the state police the threats stopped, but that “people should know what’s going on.”
