Madison Bednar arguably pitched her best game of the year and the Frazier softball team shook off a little rust and knocked off Class 4A Laurel Highlands, 9-2, in a nonsection game Tuesday at Commodore Park.
“For our first game in almost a week, I was pretty pleased,” Frazier coach Don Hartman said. “I’m really glad after having the Washington game called off, we were able to get this game in before playing a big game tomorrow.”
Bednar was pinpoint with her accuracy as she scattered four hits in a complete game effort. She allowed only one earned run and struck out 11.
“I liked everything about what she did today,” Hartman said. “I think she went out there and pitched her best game of the season. She had good velocity, she was hitting her spots and she did a good job of keeping them off balance.”
Coming off a 13-3 loss to Belle Vernon Monday, the defensive woes continued for Laurel Highlands (1-10).
The Mustangs committed seven errors and consistently changed their defensive lineup through each inning.
Bri Hunt allowed eight runs in five innings pitched. Of those eight, only two were earned. She allowed eight hits in taking the loss.
Delaney Warnick, Rylee Evans and Maria Felsher each had two hits to lead the Frazier (9-3) offense.
“We had nine hits but probably could have had more,” Hartman said. “We just couldn’t get timed up. That’s why I’m glad we were able to get this game and get some swings. Tomorrow, we’re going to see more velocity, for sure.”
