A group of Washington Township residents have created a website and are circulating a petition opposing the potential construction of a dollar store along Route 201.
Calling itself “Washington Township Concerned Citizens,” the group has created a website as “a place to ensure the continued safety of our bedroom community.”
At recent board of supervisors meetings and on the new website — wtcc.info — residents Don Gray, Mike Hamed, Mike Kotura, Bonnie Halinka and Jim Rose questioned whether rumors that a developer is looking into building a dollar store along Fayette Avenue are true.
“There are rumors that after the failed bid to buy the land across Route 201 from the Washington Township Fire Hall, a dollar store is now exploring the possibility of buying land to open a store at approximately 1129 Fayette Ave. or just south of the Fayette Avenue/Washington Road, Fayette Street and Vernon Avenue intersection,” the website states.
In a phone call with the Mon Valley Independent, Gray said he and his wife looked out their window one day and saw a drilling rig on the property in question.
“They were taking core samples,” he said.
After talking to colleagues in the geotechinical drilling industry, his wife learned the developer drilling at the Fayette Avenue property frequently works on the development of Dollar General and Family Dollar stores.
Gray did not provide the name of the developer and said he can’t confirm if it’s a Dollar General or Family Dollar that is being considered for the property.
