Tyrol mud causes safety concerns

Mud on Tyrol Boulevard makes the road look more like a flooded river than a paved roadway, and Rostraver Township officials say it’s causing a safety issue in their community.
“My buddy sent me drone footage that shows all of Tyrol. It’s disgusting,” said Rostraver Township Commissioner John Lorenzo. “We’re totally fed up with the total disregard not only of our community, but our residents.”
Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill was ordered by the state Department of Environmental Protection to install a truck wash station and to sweep the street on a regular basis. Lorenzo said sweeping the mud just spreads it around.
“They claim to be a business that’s environmentally friendly and here they are polluting our road,” he said. “People are afraid to travel on it. It affects not only Rostraver, but Monessen as well, keeping people from getting to the central business district.”
Lauren Fraley of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said several unannounced inspections were held at the landfill at various times last week.
“DEP’s inspector documented tracking on Tyrol Boulevard and issued a notice of the violation, for which a civil penalty may be assessed,” Fraley said.
