With a major snowstorm in today’s forecast, a group of Snow Angels — volunteers with shovels in tow — will brave the cold to help older and disabled residents in Monessen make sure their sidewalks are clear.
Mayor Matt Shorraw and local parents are spearheading the program in Monessen after seeing its success in Pittsburgh.
The Snow Angels program will connect volunteers in the community with residents in need of snow and ice removal throughout the winter.
“I reached out to Mayor (Bill) Peduto’s office and asked if they would mind if we replicated it here,” Shorraw said. “They were very supportive of us bringing this program to Monessen.”
After getting the OK, local parents and students got involved.
“There are a couple of local parents and students who are initially interested and helped encourage me to implement this idea, but it’s still in the early stages,” Shorraw said. “Many local students need community-service hours for various organizations and many other residents simply want to find a way to give back to the community.
“That’s difficult to do right now with the pandemic, but this is an easy way and safe way to feel good about giving back.”
