Whenever Michael Moorer makes a public appearance, he is usually introduced as a “three-time heavyweight boxing champion.”
He hopes to add one more accolade to that introduction: International Boxing Hall of Famer.
The former Monessen resident will find out if that will happen next month when the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) announces its Class of 2021.
Moorer is one of a bevy of big names from the sport who are candidates for enshrinement.
Along with Moorer, other nominees include Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., Andre Ward, Timothy Bradley, James Toney, Meldred Taylor and Vinny Pazienza.
Voters with the Boxing Writers Association of America, along with an international panel of boxing historians will vote for a maximum of five from the list of 42. The Class of 2021 will be announced in early December.
The induction ceremony will be held in Canastota, N.Y., where the IBHOF museum is located, in June. The Class of 2021 will be honored along with the Class of 2020, whose induction ceremony was canceled because of COVID-19.
Moorer posted a 52-4-1 record (40 KOs) during a spectacular career from 1988-2008 that began with him winning the light heavyweight crown (1988-91) before he moved up and won the heavyweight crown on three occasions.
Moorer held the WBO heavyweight title from 1992 to 1993; the unified WBA, IBF and lineal heavyweight titles in 1994; and the IBF heavyweight title again from 1996 to 1997.
