Brewster ahead in 45th District

Incumbent Democrat Jim Brewster was leading in Allegheny County Tuesday night in his race to retain the state’s 45th District senate seat against Republican challenger and newcomer Nicole Ziccarelli, according to unofficial results from the county election bureau.
Ziccarelli held a lead in Westmoreland County, according to unofficial results.
Brewster, a lifelong McKeesport resident who lives in the Christy Park neighborhood with his wife Linda, has held the seat since he won a special election in 2010. Prior to that, he served as a McKeesport councilman and then the city’s mayor.
Ziccarelli, a White Oak native who lives in Lower Burrell with her husband Frank-John and their four young children, is an attorney.
Pre-canvassing of mail-in and absentee ballots, which includes a review of the declaration envelope to ensure its sufficiency, opening the declaration envelope, extraction and opening the secrecy envelope, the extraction, flattening and scanning of the ballot, began at 7 a.m. Tuesday in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. Tallying the ballots is scheduled to continue today.
