NAACP launches Vote 2020

The Nov. 3 general election might be one of the most anticipated and highly publicized in recent memory, and the NAACP is doing its part to make sure voters’ voices are heard.

The national organization recently launched its Vote 2020 campaign, which raises awareness for voter registration, education and turnout. The campaign includes using social media to post messages that inspire voting and communicate how the NAACP can help voters.

The Mon Valley NAACP is preparing for an election of its own, as the unit will hold its branch election Nov. 12. Current President David Hunter has announced he will not be running for another term, as he also serves as vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of Allegheny Land Trust, chairman of the Finance Committee of Mon Valley Hospital Foundation, member of Mon Vale Health Resources Board of Directors as well as serving on the inaugural WPIAL Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.

Before he leaves office, Hunter was quick to point out the importance of local NAACP members having the ability to vote on Nov. 3.

“There’s always an emphasis on voting with the NAACP, that’s a constant,” Hunter said. “Since our founding, the NAACP has always been non-partisan.

“One of the focuses on this election is the obvious effort to suppress the vote or make it more difficult to vote. Democracy will thrive only if you make voting easier, not more difficult. Many of the efforts to hinder voting is based on non-existing voter fraud. There is no evidence of voter fraud having any significance to any national election. There also isn’t any evidence of mail-in voting fraud.”

Founded in 1909 as a response to the ongoing violence against Black people around the country, the NAACP is the largest civil rights organization in the nation. The group has more than 2,200 units and branches across the nation, along with well over two million activists.

Its mission is to secure political, educational, social and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
