Private donation aids Charleroi VFD

Donations from the community have helped fire departments continue to operate during the coronavirus pandemic.

Many departments are largely self funded and rely on bingo and other events to raise money to purchase necessities.

While many of those events have been canceled because of the virus, a Speers resident who recently made a donation to the Charleroi Volunteer Fire Department hopes his generosity will inspire others.

Michael Andresky pulled up to a drive-thru pizza night held by the department last month and asked to speak to Glenn Shipley, who runs the fundraiser.

“I walked up to his car. He ordered a large pizza and handed me a check for $500,” Shipley said. “I told him he could have as many pizzas as he wanted.”

Shipley said Andresky wanted to donate to the department in hopes of inspiring other community members to do the same.

“He knows it has been tough for us, being that we could not really do a lot of our fundraisers because of COVID, and things like this really help,” he said.
