Donora debates new basketball court on First Street property

Donora council may shelve the idea of putting a basketball court or any other type of recreational facility on borough property along First Street.
The idea of installing a basketball court was suggested after a skate park was discussed earlier this year for the borough property that runs along First Street between Castner and Allen avenues.
The skate park hit a wall with council for several reasons, including insurance liabilities and its proximity to Chubs Pub that blocks the construction of any type of playground.
Chubs Pub’s liquor license requires it to be a certain number of feet from any playground, so focus turned to the further corner of the property, near the intersection of First Street and Allen Avenue for a potential basketball court.
In a meeting Thursday, borough Administrator Terri Petroske said she spoke to an engineer about putting in a basketball court and there would need to be a playmat installed before asphalt could be put down. She said some equipment that would need to be purchased is on back order, including hoops and backboards that could range from $800 to $1,850 each.
