EADC calls off Plum Street concerts

A week after announcing plans to move forward with the summer concert series on Plum Street, the Elizabeth Area Development Corporation has decided to cancel it.
The first Sounds Like Summer on Plum concert had been scheduled for July 9, but that was before the latest COVID-19 spike in Allegheny County. There were 186 new cases reported in the county over the weekend, prompting county officials to ban the sale of alcohol for on-site consumption, though still allowing take-out sales.
“It’s probably just the responsible thing to do with the recent uptick in the virus. We didn’t have to do this; we just thought it was best,” said EADC chairman Larry Ross. “Instead of going week by week and not knowing what was happening, we thought we’d be pre-emptive.”
Ross said it was a difficult decision because the concerts draw people to the downtown and allow the EADC to raise money through 50-50 raffles and other activities to support community events such as the Halloween parade.
“We’d like to do the Halloween parade, but who knows what October will bring? Light Up Night is in November. It’s just an unusual year. We have to do what’s good for the whole,” Ross said.
