The Monessen softball team claimed its first state playoff victory in program history with a 3-2 win over Cambridge Springs in the first round of the PIAA tournament Monday at Penn State-Behrend.

The Greyhounds, who fell to West Greene on a walkoff hit in the bottom of the seventh inning in the WPIAL Class A championship game Thursday, advance to the PIAA quarterfinals where they will face Union.

“It feels good just to be able to get back and get another game under our belt,” Monessen coach Bo Teets said. “Losing the way we did last week, it felt good to be able to get out there again and just get back to playing a little bit.

“It wasn’t an easy time of game. You’re dealing with the district champions and sitting on a bus for over three hours, so to be able to overcome all of that stuff and come out and get a win to move on to the second round, it feels good. It’s just another thing to be proud of with this group of girls.”
