The Elizabeth Area Development Corporation will host a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony May 22 for the Moose Building demolition project, its first major undertaking in the effort to, as its slogan says, “Move Elizabeth Forward.”
Larry Ross, president of the EADC, said the nonprofit group had hoped to have the old building torn down and the lot paved by the beginning of June, but with delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, that now looks more like the start date.
“As of right now, the demolition company is doing the asbestos abatement. That will be completed (this) week, then the county will come in and give the clearance for us to do the demolition,” Ross said.
Ross said the EADC will present its plans for the future use of the property to Elizabeth Borough officials at the borough’s May 26 meeting.
“It will be a parking lot. We’re looking to add an additional 14 spaces into the downtown area,” Ross said. “It’s step one of the master plan of revitalizing the downtown Elizabeth corridor.”
