A group of local volunteers will provide assistance to another community during a food distribution today in Donora.
Small Towns, Big Hearts was spearheaded by Fallowfield Township residents Michele Vidnjvich-Zitz and Lisa Bellantoni, along with help from a host of other residents.
Barchemy in the Donora Industrial Park sponsors the group, which distributed food to 195 families in Fallowfield Township last weekend.
Barchemy has opened a checking account specifically for the event so residents can donate money that will be used to purchase food.
Volunteers have been collecting food and monetary donations for each distribution.
Pick-up for Donora residents will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the intersection of Sixth Street and McKean Avenue.
Boxes will be given to those driving and 55 bags will be available for those walking.
“People and businesses have been reaching out and donating so generously,” Vidnjvich-Zitz said. “We also now have a church group who may be joining forces with us.”
The group is planning similar efforts throughout other Mon Valley communities as the COVID-19 crisis continues.
Next up is Charleroi on May 19, and then Monessen on a date yet to be determined.
Food collection boxes for the Charleroi distribution are set up at the fire department and the Charleroi Area Elementary Center.
More details regarding each distribution will be shared at a later date.
Vidnjvich-Zitz said she is humbled by the community’s generosity.
“I want to thank the community so much,” she said. “The response has been overwhelming and we are more than ready to take on our next task.
“We appreciate every card, phone call, text or social media post we have got.”
The group accepts non-perishable food donations, canned goods, dried fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, protein bars, spaghetti sauce, tea and juice.
Monetary donations can be made by check to Barchemy and mailed to 65 E. First St., Donora, PA 15033.
