Emergency provisions to be extended through May 31

The Authority of the Borough of Charleroi is extending provisions to aid customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 13, ABC announced a series of policies and procedures to assist its customers and staff.

Authority Solicitor Todd Pappasergi said in response to continued public health and safety concerns, ABC will extend those provisions through at least May 31.

“Given the critical importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene as the first barrier to preventing the spread of COVID-19, ABC will not post any delinquent properties nor shut off any water services until at least May 31, 2020,” Pappasergi said.

ABC General Manager Charles Cardinale stressed that while customers will be responsible for paying bills and past due balances, water service is critical during the pandemic.

“ABC understands that providing water services to all individuals during this critical time is important,” Cardinale said.

The authority will continue to monitor the pandemic in the coming weeks to adjust changes as necessary.

The previously announced policies regarding service center operations and meter readings will remain through May 31.

Authority personnel will not conduct internal, manual meter readings.

All customers who have meters that must be read inside their property will have their bills estimated based upon past usage.

Customers with internal meters that are read manually who wish to call in their meter reads to the service center for the current billing can do so until May 10.

Customers who have radio, remote, or outside manual reads will continue to have their meters read as normally occurs.

“As a life-sustaining entity, over the past month, ABC has been continually monitoring the impact of COVID-19 on its customers, while at the same time continuing to operate the water and sewage systems at normal capacities,” Cardinale said. “ABC will continue to cooperate and work with local, state, and federal authorities, and will update the public as it becomes necessary.”

Cardinale also encouraged customers to contact the Authority with any questions or concerns regarding their water service or quality.
