Monessen out of Veterans Day parade rotation

Until a letter arrived in the mail this week, Monessen was planning to host the Mon Valley Veterans Day parade.

However, Mayor Matt Shorraw was informed by Washington County commissioners that the parade will be exclusive to Washington County starting this year.

For more than a century, the parade has been hosted in the Mon Valley, rotating annually between Charleroi, Donora, Monongahela, Monessen and Washington.

Veterans from each community came together in 1919 to form the Mon Valley Veterans Council, a protocol and rotation for the veterans of each member city that would conduct a regional parade and program each year.

In recent years, commissioners said in the letter, the protocol and bylaws have not been followed.
