Ruokonen’s return sparks Leopards

For four regular season games, Belle Vernon Area senior Hunter Ruokonen stood on the sideline and simply watched.
That’s all he could do after dislocating and chipping his elbow on an interception return in a 63-13 win over Laurel Highlands on Sept. 13.
“It’s always terrible sitting on the sidelines in any sport, watching everyone else doing something that you could be out there helping them do,” Ruokonen said. “It was great, though, watching everyone else get reps, seeing what the team is without you and seeing everyone work.”
While Ruokonen was still supportive of his teammates while having to serve as a spectator, the experience opened his eyes.
