Clairton’s two-year absence from the WPIAL championship game is over.
The top-seeded Bears were determined not to come up short again, smothering No. 4 Cornell, 39-0, in a WPIAL Class A semifinal matchup at Charters-Houston Friday night.
Clairton (10-2) earned a trip to the North Shore to play third-seeded Sto-Rox for a WPIAL title next Saturday.
Clairton, which won nine WPIAL titles and four state championships from 2006 to 2016, battled injuries to key players before suffering semifinal losses each of the past two seasons.
“It truly feels great because I think the last two years (we lost) because of injuries,” said sixth-year Clairton coach Wayne Wade, who led the Bears to three straight WPIAL titles from 2014 to 2016. “For these guys to be healthy, work as hard as they’ve worked and not have their season stifled because of injuries, as a coach this is what you want for your team.”
