After exchanging blows for a quarter, Charleroi and Freedom’s Class 2A first-round contest turned into a defensive struggle.
But it was the host Bulldogs putting together a long drive in the third quarter for the eventual game-winning touchdown in a 21-14 Freedom win over the Cougars.
After Charleroi went three and out with the game tied at 14, the Bulldogs (8-3) marched the ball 65 yards on 13 plays, the drive ending when Cole Beck connected with tight end Noah Valles for a 1-yard touchdown pass.
“Cole carried us tonight,” Freedom coach Greg Toney said. “We knew this was going to be a tight, defensive game. Whoever didn’t make mistakes and won the field-position battle was going to win. The defense was outstanding the whole game.”
