Belle Vernon Area head coach Matt Humbert doesn’t like to use cliches when speaking about his team. But when it comes to Friday’s WPIAL quarterfinal against New Castle at James Weir Stadium, one cliche sticks out the most.
“This game is going to be won in the trenches,” Humbert said matter of factly. “I know it’s cliche, but this game is going to be a good test to see if that holds true.”
It’s also his top key of the game if the No. 3-seeded Leopards (8-1) want to avoid an upset by the No. 6 Hurricanes.
“Our line play, it has to be dominant,” Humbert said. “A lot of people thought we lost three big parts of our offensive line, but it never really alarmed me. We have a solid five and six, seven and eight have filled in nicely in our rotation. That’s on both sides of the ball.”
