The Charleroi service station that owns the gasoline tank overflow system that malfunctioned and leaked gas into the borough’s sewer system last weekend is being held accountable for cleaning up the contaminated soil.
Charleroi residents and business owners who live or own businesses on or near McKean Avenue and First Street were puzzled and worried last weekend when they began sensing gasoline smells coming through the borough’s sewers and into their homes and basements.
Firefighters were forced several times over the weekend to ventilate homes on and around those two roads after they found “raw gas” in the main sewer line, which is under McKean Avenue.
Firefighters and borough street workers were joined by state Department of Environmental Protection crews Sunday night and throughout the day Monday to investigate and control the situation.
