The Roar Store will officially open for “business” today at Belle Vernon Area High School.
An initiative led by graphics design teacher Matt Horzempa, and nearly 40 of his students, the store will begin selling unique, custom designed and hand produced merchandise today during school hours.
Horzempa said when he started teaching the class last year he had an idea to convert the curriculum into something that would offer his students real world skills applicable outside of the classroom.
So, he began brainstorming how to change the classroom dynamic from simply teaching software to a hands-on experience allowing students to design, produce and sell their own merchandise that is appealing to customers and fills a need within the school community.
After learning the BVA Charitable Fund had grant monies available to teachers, he wrote a proposal and received $5,000 that was used to purchase a kiosk decked out in student designed Leopard logos and colors.
