The next time the City of Monongahela submits a grant application to the state, local officials are confident the governor will remember who they are.
Gov. Tom Wolf on Thursday spent more than an hour walking through the downtown area getting to know some of the residents and business owners before wrapping up his tour at the Noble J. Dick Aquatorium with a plate of cookies from the world-record-setting Wedding Cookie Table Ladies.
City Councilwoman Claudia Williams, who is on the board for Aquatorium Innovations, told the governor that concerts held at the aquatorium have drawn an estimated 50,000 people from at least nine different states to the city, with some staying overnight at a local guest house and others eating in local restaurants and shopping in the downtown business district.
Wolf said Monongahela, which celebrated its 250 year history this summer, is a great example of what Pennsylvania communities can do as well as what communities need from the state.
“I live in a small town, a borough, not a city, but Third Class cities across the commonwealth are struggling, but Monongahela is doing some great things,” Wolf said.
