It’s now easier for visitors to Mingo Cemetery in Finleyville to find some of the more famous names in the cemetery.
Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Washington County Community Foundation, gravestones of six historic figures from the Whiskey Rebellion have been refurbished and are now easy to locate.
Dubbed “Headstones of American History-The Whiskey Rebellion,” the project was started by Mingo Cemetery volunteer historian and Washington County resident Dottie Bewick, who applied for the grant more than a year ago. It was awarded last September.
“It takes a lot of work to do something like this, but it was worth it,” Bewick said. “I did a lot reading and visiting county archives. I did a lot of rubbing on the sandstone graves to verify the names.”
