The Belle Vernon boys soccer team used three first-half goals from sophomore Daniel Sassak to beat local rival Monessen, 5-0, on the opening day of the third annual Paul Sasko Kickoff Classic Saturday night.
Sassak’s first goal came less than two minutes into the game on the Leopards first shot. He tapped the ball past Monessen goalie Jack Sacco off of a corner kick by Sam Desai.
“Getting that early goal really settled us down because everyone has nerves the first game of the year,” said third-year BVA coach Rob Miele. “We started five sophomores so getting an early lead and some breathing room I think really helped us.”
Sassak scored again three minutes later on the Leps second shot. He chipped a ball over Sacco off a throw in by Tyler Kovatch for a 2-0 lead.
