During his team’s most recent holiday break, Dax Thomas State Farm head coach Tom Rodriguez said he knew he needed to play his bench more and receive contributions from everyone on his roster.

So with a fairly large lead in the second half Monday, Rodriguez decided to play a number of his young bench players.

While Belle Vernon Dairy Queen did make things interesting in the final six minutes, Rodriguez’s bunch overcame a sluggish second half to hold on for a 32-26 victory over BVDQ in J. Budd Grebb Memorial Summer Basketball League girls action at the Mechanic Street Playground.

“I want to develop these girls for the high school season, not just win games down here,” Rodriguez said. “With a pretty substantial lead, I just decided that my younger kids were going to play extensively. Perhaps I got a little bit anxious there, but the younger kids have to learn how to play in those situations as well.
