Food banks concerned about benefits

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and Department of Agriculture are encouraging support for area food banks following last month’s partial government shutdown.
The shutdown strained resources at food banks as they worked to assist furloughed workers. Though the government is up and running for now, many food banks are struggling to replenish their resources and are preparing for an increased need throughout this month as March SNAP benefits will not be available unless a budget is passed. According to Gov. Tom Wolf’s office, there are 1.8 million Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants.
Many impacted families are still struggling to get back on their feet and are unsure if they will receive benefits next month.
February’s SNAP benefits were sent out early on Jan. 16 and 17, rather than the typical issue date within the first 10 business days of the month.
